IFF Cologne 2021: ‘Stimuli’ Review
Stimuli is an inventive, wrenching, poetic and riveting short film exploring the edge of life, presented in official selection at the 2021 International Film Festival Cologne.
From August 19th to 22nd, 2021, we had the pleasure of joining German audiences in discovering the lineup of the 2nd International Film Festival Cologne, which unfolded as a remarkably successful in-person edition. Over four days, the festival showcased works across five different sections: feature films, documentaries, short films, music videos, and experimental films.
One of our highlights from this year’s festival was found within the short film section, where Turkish-Swedish director Kaan Orgunmat presented “Stimuli,” a powerful 15-minute short exploring and questioning the edge of life from the perspective of a patient in a coma.
Early on, we meet a man seemingly confined to a room where the reality of his surroundings appears blurred: objects come and go, and his environment lacks palpability. This portrayal effectively captures the unsteady thoughts of a comatose patient, the passage of time, and the feeling of isolation within a body that can no longer communicate with the outside world as before.
A poignant metaphor emerges as we realize the room, with its solitary peephole, symbolizes the impassable frontier between the patient’s mind and reality. Time is distorted on the other side of this border, and the patient grasps only fragments of the real world, where relatives or doctors occasionally visit.
Without revealing too much about the film’s unfolding, “Stimuli” proves to be a brilliant tour de force on many levels.
The carefully crafted mise-en-scène allows the film to seamlessly combine and create interactions between two worlds with distinct timelines and rules. It vividly illustrates how thoughts wander and jump chaotically when communication is impaired. By skillfully navigating the character’s random thoughts, the film offers exhilarating and virtuosic moments of cinema.
Director Kaan Orgunmat adeptly portrays the unique life and activity of the brain, particularly when it serves as the sole refuge for a person characterized by physical absence. The film delivers a poignant sensorial experience, showcasing the power of the brain and the intimate refuge it provides. Memories resurface as the patient reacts to stimuli from the outside world, demonstrating how the mind holds true parts of one’s identity and can provide vital energy for healing.
The fluid editing, infectious music, and acute sound design further demonstrate impressive mastery, contributing to a unique experience that leaves a lasting impact and prompts reflection on a subject that merits more discussion.
Overall, “Stimuli” is an inventive, wrenching, poetic, and riveting short film we highly recommend experiencing.
